  16. <p>    HEATHERS. There's a disturbing mortality rate among
  17. Westerburg High's snooty elite. A rash of suicides? Or is
  18. someone killing the prom queens of Ohio? Daniel Waters' witty
  19. script touches two stark teen issues: the need to be accepted
  20. and the urge to end it all.

  22. <p>    84 CHARLIE MOPIC. In the jungles of Viet Nam, a lost patrol
  23. finds enemies on both sides of combat. But the main character of
  24. Patrick Duncan's war movie is a documentary-film camera. Through

  29. <p>    GHETTO. Joshua Sobol's Nazi-era tragicomedy, seen across the

  34. realism suits August Wilson's lyric text, at the Los Angeles
  35. Theater Center.

  38. newcomer Amelia Campbell glow as nanny and budding adolescent in
  39. this deeply moving off-Broadway revival of Carson McCullers'
  40. coming-of-age story of the pre-civil rights South.

  43. </p>
  44. <p>    THOMAS HART BENTON: AN AMERICAN ORIGINAL, Nelson-Atkins
  45. Museum of Art, Kansas City. He said he wished his work could be
  46. exhibited in saloons, but the colorful, cantankerous Benton
  47. (1889-1975) is being honored in his centennial year not only
  48. with a biography and a PBS special but also with this
  49. full-dress retrospective in his native state. Featured: the
  50. stylized murals of American history and daily life for which he
  51. was best known. Through June 18.

  53. <p>    WHISTLER AND HIS CIRCLE, Minnesota Museum of Art, St. Paul.
  54. Etchings, lithographs and paintings representing Whistler's high
  55. achievements in those media, as well as his influence on other
  56. late-19th century artists, chiefly such Americans as Joseph
  57. Pennell, Charles Keene and John Marin. Through June 25.

  72. <p>    SAM KINISON: HAVE YOU SEEN ME LATELY? (Warner Bros.).
  73. Abusive, scurrilous and hilarious: postpunk comedy meets
  74. primal-scream therapy. Offensive? You betcha. But there are
  75. wonderful bits about sexism and heartbreak, as well as the best
  76. riffs on organized religion since Lenny Bruce.

  78. <p>    ROSANNE CASH: HITS 1979-1989 (Columbia). She's got a
  79. half-past-4-in-the-morning voice and a knowing way with a song
  80. that can make any listener wish the night would go on forever.

  82. <p>    ANTONIN DVORAK: AMERICAN SUITE, SYMPHONY NO. 9 (Virgin
  83. Classics). Libor Pesek conducts the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic
  84. Orchestra in exuberant renditions of these powerful works, whose
  85. brooding Slavic soul belies their New World theme.

  88. </p>
  89. <p>    UNFINISHED STORIES (various cable and PBS stations, April
  90. 23, 5 p.m. EDT). The work of artists and performers who have
  91. died of AIDS will be celebrated in this 13-hour telethon,
  92. produced jointly by the Bravo cable network and several PBS
  93. stations. Tommy Tune, Christopher Reeve and Cheryl Tiegs are
  94. among the hosts.

  96. <p>    MURDERERS AMONG US: THE SIMON WIESENTHAL STORY (HBO, April
  97. 23, 8 p.m. EDT). The famed Nazi hunter is portrayed by Ben
  98. Kingsley in a properly reverent TV-movie bio.

  100. <p>    MARGARET BOURKE-WHITE (TNT, April 24, 8 p.m. EDT). Farrah
  101. Fawcett plays the globe-trotting LIFE photographer in a
  102. made-for-Turner movie that dwells equally on her career and her
  103. long-term relationship with writer Erskine Caldwell (Frederic
  104. Forrest).

  108. <p>    CITIZENS, A CHRONICLE OF THE FRENCH REVOLUTION by Simon
  109. Schama (Knopf; $29.95). Exactly 200 years after the bloody
  110. facts, a Harvard historian offers a fascinating, often
  111. surprising account of what went right -- and wrong -- during
  112. one of the world's most celebrated social convulsions.

  114. <p>    A PRAYER FOR OWEN MEANY by John Irving (Morrow; $19.95). In
  115. this inventive, indignant novel, a boisterous cast and a
  116. spirited story line propel a sawed-off Christly caricature
  117. through two decades of U.S. foreign policy debacles.

  119. <p>    THE JOY LUCK CLUB by Amy Tan (Putnam; $18.95). A bright,
  120. sharp-flavored first novel on the subject of growing up ethnic
  121. in the U.S. The topic sounds familiar, but the Chinese spice
  122. added to this old recipe is invigorating and refreshingly true.
